Top 7 Health Benefits of Lemon Water

When we think of lemons, or citrus fruits in general we think of vitamin C. In fact lemons are packed with more than just vitamin C; they are crammed with vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and fibre.

I have heard a lot about lemon water and how it’s good for you and great for your digestion. Obviously I wanted to research and find out more about lemon water. Little did I know just how many benefits there are!
Preparing Lemon Water
Because lemon juice is very acidic (pH of about 2) and its acidity can harm the enamel of your teeth, therefore it’s difficult to drink lemon juice on its own, so it’s beneficial to dilute it with water at any temperature. Drink it first thing in the morning, and wait 15 to 30 minutes to have breakfast. This will help you fully receive the benefits of lemon water, which are listed below.

The Top Benefits of Lemon Water
1. Gives your immune system a boost and combats viral infections.
The citrus fruit is full of vitamin C which is a great support molecule for our immune system. When we are stressed or when we have a cold the concentration of vitamin C in our blood stream starts to fall so an extra dose of vitamin C is required to keep our vitamin C levels balanced. Warming up lemon water can also help you fight of viral infections and aid the body in getting rid of the infection completely.
2. Excellent source of essential ions.
Lemons are high in potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. A high concentration of essential ions are valuable for good heart health, and brain and nerve function.
3. Aids digestion.
Lemon juice encourages healthy digestion in the digestive tract and can reduce symptoms of heartburn, burping and bloating.
4. Cleanses your system.
Drinking lemon water is a great detox for your body. It flushed out the toxins in your body and aids the enzyme function of the liver and stimulates the liver function.
5. Preserves vital antioxidants.
Citrus juices have been proven to preserve the concentration of antioxidants found in green tea, even after the digestion process, so that the body can benefit with the bigger concentration of antioxidants. Just add a squeeze of lemon to your next cup of green tea.
6. Helps you lose weight.
Lemons contain pectin fibre, which passes through the digestive tract and gives a sense of “fullness” which can reduce hunger cravings, and therefore you won’t need to compensate by eating more food.
7. Reduces inflammation.
Lemon water dissolves uric acid, which could be in excess in the body. Excess uric acid in the body can cause inflammation of joints. Lemon increases the acidity in your body which can remove uric acid and reduce inflammation.

Obviously these aren't the only benefits of drinking lemon water, there are plenty more health benefits which can be added to this list.
