I am dedicating this post to one of the most important medical risks which are impacting our lives every day and will seriously affect our future on this planet: antibiotic abuse. Yes, as well as abusing our planet's climate, we are also abusing antibiotics which leads to a phenomenon called antibiotic resistance where some antibiotics cease to work against some strains of bacteria (e.g. MRSA - methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
We need to utilize antibiotics safely and only when they are needed so that they remain available for when we desperately need them.

This isn't anything new, you've probably heard of this in the news or on other science blogs. Still, this is an important discussion to have. Bacteria are becoming incredibly resistant to antibiotics every day and a Harvard University cohort of scientists demonstrated the power of the evolution of bacteria. With an abnormally large Petri dish, they demonstrated how E.coli can genetically mutate (and thrive within) to overcome barriers of 0, 1, 10, 100 and even 1000 times the dosage of antibiotic. This process took only 11 days. This shows us that we need to be more aware of how we use antibiotics and how abuse leads to resistant bacteria.

What are antibiotics and what are they good for?
Antibiotics, by definition, are used to combat most bacterial infections. They work by killing the bacterium, therefore preventing the infection from reproducing and spreading to various parts of the body.

As with all types of drugs, antibiotics come with side effects and since they combat bacteria, they also kill some of the good bacteria in our digestive systems that we need to stay healthy (hence why some people are prescribed probiotics to encourage the regrowth of good bacteria in our guts).

When should they be avoided?
Antibiotics should absolutely not be given for viral infections such as the common cold or influenza (flu) and most coughs and sore throats. Antibiotics work only against some bacterial infections. They do not work against viral infections caused by viruses and should not be used as a treatment for viruses.

Also, the UK’s NHS (National Health Service) has detailed pages on when antibiotics are given and when they will not be given,  for example, mild bacterial infections which can clear up without antibiotics.

What can I do to combat antibiotic resistance?

  1. When you’re sick, go to your doctor so they can prescribe the right medication for you. The pharmacist is only there to dispense medication not diagnose your illness.
  2. If you need a course of antibiotics to make sure you complete it. This ensures that the infection has been 100% cleared from the body. Failing to do so may result in the bacteria becoming resistant to the antibiotic and creating a more resistant strain that cannot be treated with antibiotics (take MRSA for example).
  3. If you have excess antibiotics, do not give them to someone else to use. Discard them by giving them to your local pharmacy who will dispose of them safely.
