How to unboil an egg… Yep! You read that correctly, now read on...

I don’t know how many people in this world have thought of unboiling an egg or if it was even possible. However it is actually possible and the genius people who thought of it have a great idea and cause behind it besides the title.

Don't believe the Science lies: Shisha isn't as harmful as smoking #NoToSmoking #YesToBetterHealth

I hate smoking so much! I hate it so much and every time I go out I try and avoid anyone smoking in front of me or passing by me. Passively inhaling someone’s smoke makes my lungs writhe in disgust. At my time at university my lectures were in between two buildings, in the ground between the two building other students use it as a smoking place where at least 100 people are smoking at the same time (I might be over exaggerating with that number a little bit). Every time I used to pass through, I would hold my breath so I wouldn't inhale the toxic smoke.  Smoking is detrimental to your health and so is passive smoking. By passive smoking, you also inhale all the toxic smoke even if you are not a smoker and it can have negative effects on you too.

Top 7 Health Benefits of Lemon Water

When we think of lemons, or citrus fruits in general we think of vitamin C. In fact lemons are packed with more than just vitamin C; they are crammed with vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and fibre. I have heard a lot about lemon water and how it’s good for you and great for your digestion. Obviously I wanted to research and find out more about lemon water.  Little did I know just how many benefits there are!

My First Guest Post on GradJobs UK - Looking After Your Health After Graduation

(( I am very proud to announce my very first guest post on GradJobs UK!! Be sure to check it out and tell me what you think!  You can find it here: GradJobs UK Blog: Looking after your health after graduation )) [UPDATE: The Gradjobs blog has since been removed and some posts moved to GradsCorner on Gradjobs UK website. So I have posted my guest post here for everyone to read.] Looking after your health after graduation. Stress. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about stress is a person tearing their hair out and screaming in despair.  After the graduation ceremony graduates start to face the “real world”, independence and the dreaded question: “what are you going to do next?” Since this is the biggest transition in your life it’s definitely going to be the most stressful one. It’s really easy to get caught up in the moment and give in to stress, particularly in today’s tumultuous economy with hardly any job opportunities. Anxiety can overwhelm you

The Mystery of the Yellow Taj Mahal

Back in 1631 the emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for his deceased wife, Mumtaz Mahal, to honor her memory . It is regarded as one of the seven wonders of the world. Sadly this wonder is becoming tarnished by the day. Due to pollution, the Taj Mahal marble is starting to turn yellow. Even though, every couple of years the mausoleum is given a clay mask to remove all the grime and restore the sparkling white marble, the grime returns over and over again every few years.

Don't believe the science lies: Wear your coat or you’ll get a cold!

Can you really catch a cold when it’s cold outside? It turns out that actually staying warm can be useful and our mums were right in telling us to wrap up and keep warm and to wear a jacket when we go out.

New Segment! Two Words Two Definitions

A new segment I will be adding to Crystals and Catalysts will be called Two Words Two Definitions. In this section I will be choosing two words which seem relatively similar in the science world but have two completely different meanings. If you have any ideas fr this segment, or any chemical / biological words that confuse you and want me to define, just drop me an email at crystalsandcatalysts@gmail.com _____________________________________ Chemistry Word Cloud courtesy of Cambridge Dictionaries Online - Chemistry general words - Smart Thesaurus Dictionary Image acceptor   allotrope   amphiprotic   amphoteric   atomic   balanced equation   carbon chain   catalyst   chemical chemical bond   chemical equation   chemical formula   chemist   chemistry   chromatography   conformation   distilled water   double bond   electrolyte   equation   formula   fractional distillation   hydrogenated   immiscible   inorganic chemistry

Top 3 Ways to Beat the Cold and Flu this winter!

What is the flu? Influenza or “flu” for short is a virus. Viruses contain either RNA or DNA but never both in one viral cell. They work by entering human cells via adsorption and exploiting the functions of the nucleus, in the healthy human cell, to replicate the  nucleic acid and place it inside capsules called nucleocapsids   which are then budded off and released out of the cell to go onto infect more healthy cells in the body; a vicious cycle.

The Chemistry of Muffin Making (best muffin recipe EVER!)

It's Christmas Eve, so I thought I'll upload something lighthearted and sweet, just in time for Christmas day. This is one of the most perfect muffin recipes (I've tried so many till I found this one!) and in the end I have put some tips to make sure you get the fluffiest muffins possible.

Dark Chocolate Improves Vasodilation (Yay for lower blood pressure!)

Dark chocolate has many health benefits and one health benefit is that it can lower blood pressure, although there has been research on this before, a new study goes into studying its effect on endothelial cells (responsible for vasoconstriction of blood vessels). At least  30% of the English population have blood pressure and most of them might not even know they have it and have not yet been diagnosed.   The endothelial cells are vital for cardiovascular function and the dysfunction of endothelial cells is one of the most precocious events in atherosclerotic process. Which is the main reason why this study was carried out on endothelial cells and taking the measurement of the  flow-mediated dilation (FMD). The FMD measurement can be seen as a predictor   of the incidence of cardiovascular events in adults with no prior cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The Method  A randomized and controlled trail was carried out, using 30 healthy young individuals, placed into 2 group

Great News for Wikipedia Lovers

We were always warned at university about the reliability of Wikipedia and that we shouldn't use it for guidance when working on projects and/or coursework and we're recommended to use Google Scholar and Science Direct for scientific research.  Because Wikipedia is an open online encyclopedia in which everyone and anyone can edit and add to the pages, its reliability isn't 100%. However the good news is, is that the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) have given access to the chemistry writers at Wikipedia access to their all their journals (gold accounts) so to ensure that every single piece of information on Wikipedia is correct and to update with all the latest updates in chemistry research.  Donating 100 "RSC Gold" accounts to Wikipedia editors gives them access  to the complete portfolio of RSC journals and databases.  Andy Mabbett the RSC's Wikimedian in Residence commented to the Royal Society of Chemistry's blog " Royal Society of Chemist

Don't believe the science lies: Okra water Cures Diabetes

I recently came across a Facebook post, from a doctor on the social media website, allegedly stating that if you soak okra in water and drink it, it will presumably be able to make your diabetes “go away”. Obviously claims like this are difficult to believe straight away, because anyone can write and claim anything on social media and gullible people may believe it; since diabetes affects almost at least one person in all our families and we all wish there was a cure for diabetes to help our loved ones from the dilemma called diabetes. Sadly diabetes cannot be cured, it’s a condition that you have to live with and combat it with regular exercise and controlling your diet and eating habits. I then went on to research and look for any journals to see if there is any evidence for these claims, however the results I got back were very little. I found only three journals. I also found many other posts on websites including diabetes.co.uk ; who do not falsify these claims but
